                                                                                    Anika J. McDonald, LCSW

Anika J. McDonald, LCSW began her career as a social worker as a child advocate for the "underdogs." As she grew within the field,  she became inspired to work in mental health supporting others, as she saw how mental illness impacted her loved ones. She received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Florida State University, where she also studied Child Development. After graduation, Anika began working with children in a shelter for Domestic Violence survivors and their children. She realized that she wanted to impact the community in a larger way and decided to study Social Work at Florida International University, where she obtained her Masters in 2015. During these studies, Anika joined Dream Defenders, advocating against police brutality and bringing awareness to disparities in society. Anika began working for a Psychosocial Rehabilitation center, counseling those affected by severe mental illnesses and while interning in several different spaces such as schools, disability centers, and group homes.

Anika has experience  as a therapist working in communities, schools, and homes, and it is through this experience she gained knowledge regarding  trauma, and where she decided she would blend her interests in art and movement in her therapeutic approaches. She has created programs teaching children and their families effective coping skills, while taking into consideration the cultural gaps the mental health field continues to have. Anika's therapeutic approach is one of  Creative Healing with a holistic blend, so as to create safer spaces to release traumatic histories. She is a Clinical Social Worker and a Creative using her platforms to focus on self-care and to overcome harmful messages society has taught black women/femmes about themselves. She continues to use dance, art  and music, as an outlet to share messages and to guide others through their own healing journey.
